Do I need a licence for solar panels?
For rooftop solar on urban land, usually not. Under Ley 12/2017 de urbanismo de les Illes Balears it normally needs only a comunicación previa (prior notification) to the council. We prepare and submit it.
When the simple route does not apply
- Protected and catalogued buildings. Heritage-listed buildings and those in the municipal catalogue, common in Palma, Sóller, Ciutadella and Dalt Vila.
- Structural work. Reinforcing a roof to carry panels.
- Rural land (suelo rústico). Separate rules depending on land classification and the type of installation, especially for ground arrays.
- Protected landscapes. The Serra de Tramuntana, natural parks and protected coast, where visibility is assessed.

Apartment communities
Using a shared roof needs the owners' community's agreement. The Ley de Propiedad Horizontal sets reduced majorities for renewable installations. See shared solar for communities.
Electrical registration
After installation, the authorised installer issues the electrical certificate and the installation is registered with the regional authority. That feeds through to your distributor, and your retailer can then apply surplus compensation. We handle the certificate and registration and help with the retailer request.
